This fantastic 9 day tour starts and finishes in the vibrant city of Marrakesh, and visits Morocco’s other Imperial cities of Fez, Rabat and Meknes. It also includes a night camping in Berber tents on the edge of the Sahara desert and a walk through the stunning Todra Gorge. After we drive over the High Atlas mountains we arrive back in Marrakech to sample the best the city has to offer. We stay in 3 or 4 star hotels and travel in A/C minibus with local Pillow tour leader and local driver.
Day One (Saturday) – Marrakech
Once you are checked into our central hotel, you have a free day until 7pm where you meet our Pillow tour leader for the pre departure information and to meet your fellow passengers. After the meeting your tour leader will walk you to the famous main square Djemaa el-Fna where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of Moroccan life and go shopping in the Souq (Market) or you can eat with the locals at the open air food stalls.
Day Two (Sunday)– Marrakech to Casablanca to Rabat (B)
After breakfast we head to Casablanca and visit the impressive Hassan II Mosque, the largest Mosque in Morocco. We then continue along the beautiful Atlantic coastline to Rabat where we visit the old fortress of Kasbah des Oudaias. While in Rabat we also visit the cities most famous landmark Le Tour Hassan and enter the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. This evening you can have free time or join us for a walk around the Medina.
Day Three (Monday)– Rabat to Volubilis to Meknes to Fez (B)
First we head to the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco at Volubilis. One of the Roman Empires furthest outposts, the ruins date from the 2nd century. We then visit the imperial city of Meknes and spend the afternoon wondering around its winding streets and beautiful architecture. This evening we drive to Fez in time for dinner.
Day Four (Tuesday) Fez (B)
Today we take a full day tour of the UNESO World Heritage city of Fez. We see the famous tanneries and Andalusian and El Quaraoiyin Mosques. We visit Najjarine Square where you can sit and watch the world go by in a café, or visit the Souks and buy some souvenirs. In the afternoon we visit New Fez (Al Jdid) which is considered the most colourful and always bustles with life.
Day Five (Wednesday) Fez to Mezouga (Sahara Desert) (B) (D)
Today we cross the Middle Atlas mountain’s and head for the Sahara Desert for what many consider is the highlight of the trip, a night camping in Berber tents on the edge of the sand dunes. You can take a camel ride or just sit back and enjoy the traditional food and dancing of the Berber people. Don’t forget to look up, on a clear night the display of stars is unforgettable.
Day Six (Thursday) Mezouga to Todra Gorge (B) (D)
We say goodbye to our Berber hosts and the Sahara sand to drive to Todra Gorge on the east side of the High Atlas Mountains. This canyon is spectacular, and we walk alongside a tiny glacier stream which is dwarfed by the smooth 160 meter high rocks each side. We stay overnight in a nearby hotel surrounded by this rugged landscape.
Day Seven (Friday)– Todra Gorge to Marrakech (B)
We stop at Ait Benhaddou which is a stunning “fortified city” along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. The beautiful palm trees present some fantastic photo opportunities as well as much needed shade. We also visit Ourzazate before taking a picturesque drive over the Atlas mountains 2260m Tizi-n-Tichka pass before arriving back at Marrakech in time for dinner.
Day Eight (Saturday)- Marrakech (B) (L)
This morning we take a traditional afternoon horse and carriage half day tour of Marrakesh, including the Menara garden, the Saadian tombs, the Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia Mosque and the Dar Si Said Museum. The half day tour finishes back at Djemaa el-Fna square where we have a group lunch and you have the afternoon free to buy any last minute souvenirs. This evening we have a last night out together before saying goodbye tomorrow.
Day Nine (Sunday)– Marrakech
After breakfast the tour terminates. However if you have some extra time in Morocco, why not climb Mt Toubkal the highest peak in North Africa (click here for more info).
Transport around Morocco in Air-conditioned mini-bus with local driver.
Seven Nights Accommodation in 3-4 star hotels (based on twin/triple share) and 1 night camping in Berber tents in Sahara.
8 Breakfasts (B), 2 Dinners (D) and 1 lunch.
Services of fully trained, English speaking local Pillow Tour leader.
