Day One, travel to Amritsar and watch Retreat ceremony
We will pick you up from your hotel in Delhi and transfer you to the central train station, where you will be booked onto the Shatabdi Express train to Amritsar. Once you arrive in Amritsar you will meet our representatives and drive the 30km to the only border crossing between India and Pakistan at Wagah. At sunset every evening crowds gather to watch the “retreat” ceremony, which involves much pomp and ceremony as soldiers from India and Pakistan march around and bang their feet while crowds from both sides of the border sing and cheer like at a football match. Once the flags of India and Pakistan are taken down, the border gates are slammed shut for another evening, and we head back to Amritsar to check into our hotel. The rest of the night is free.
Day Two Guided tour of Golden Temple and visit Jallianwala Bagh
After breakfast in the hotel, we will visit the famous Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple. Originally built in 1574, and rebuilt in 1764, the temple is considered holy by Sikhs because the eternal guru of Sikhism, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, is always present inside it and its construction was mainly intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of life and all religion to come and worship God equally. The beauty of this white marble, bronze and gold leaf building takes your breath away, and we take a fully guided tour to learn all about the temple and its importance to Sikhism.
We also visit Jallianwala Bagh memorial, scene of a large scale massacre on Sunday 13 April 1919 by the British Army against unarmed Indians to try and quell the Indian Independence uprising. Nobody knows exactly how many people died here, but estimates range between 379 and 1000 people. We visit the monument, see the walls which still have bullet holes in, and see the well where many people jumped into and drowned trying to escape the bullets.
We then return to your hotel where the rest of the day is free.
