Dahab is a former fishing village located on the southeast coast of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. It became famous during the 1980s as a hippy / new age traveller destination, and was developed by the Egyptian government into a small town and tourist destination. Today it’s a vibrant independent backpacker tourist destination, with a traditional local Egyptian vibe in stark contrast to the glitzy 5 star tourist resorts of its neighbour Sharm El Sheik.
Dahab is located directly on the sea, with restaurants, shops, dive centres, campsites, hostels and markets all located in its centre. It’s a great place to relax, soak up the sun, eat fantastic seafood and smoke shisha or alternatively you can be very active.
Dahab is a fantastic location for water sports. Windsurfing and kite surfing is very common, and the waters off Dahab offer fantastic snorkelling and diving opportunities. Dahab is littered with dive shops, and many of the dives sites are within 100 meters of the shore line, meaning you can literally walk into the sea and experience an amazing sea life. There are also boat tours to dive the Thistlegorm wreck (British ship sunk during WW2) or Ras Mohammed national marine park, often voted in the top three dive sites in the world.
There are a few day trips from Dahab we strongly recommend. If you don’t want to dive there is a fantastic snorkelling location called the blue hole just north of Dahab, and its well worth a visit! For your fix of culture, we suggest St Catherine’s Monastery and Mount Sinai. However there are numerous other activities you can enjoy, including 2 hour camel safaris (approx £12 per person), 2 hour quad bike tours (approx £15 per person) or you could go stargazing in the desert with Bedouin guides and see the stars and planets through a telescope (approx £30 per person).
All of our Egypt tours which visit the Red Sea stop in Dahab. We prefer its laid back Egyptian feel and identity. Also the range of water sport and desert based activities means it’s a great adventure travel location.
